About Balkan Trail

Why choose The Balkan Trail?

Exploring Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro on your own can be complicated, but we take care of 100% of the logistics: from local transfers and navigation with an offline app to all the cross-border permits you need. That leaves you free to focus on hiking and enjoy the experience to the fullest. Along the way you pitch your tent on the land of welcoming local families, discovering authentic Balkan hospitality and making unforgettable memories. Set against the spectacular high-mountain scenery of the Albanian Alps, this trek is an exciting yet perfectly balanced adventure at an affordable price, with full support at every stage from our experienced English-speaking guides and local expert guides.

We have been organising the Balkan Trail since 2021, and our travellers rate us 4.9/5.

Who is this trip suitable for?

Anyone aged 16 to 65 who is in good physical shape and loves adventure can join this trip (please note that participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). As the trek demands sustained effort every day, you need to be in good general health and ready to adapt to changeable mountain weather.

Is this your first multi-day hike and are you unsure about your fitness? Ask yourself a few basic questions:

  • Do you exercise regularly?
  • Are you healthy and free of injuries?
  • Can you comfortably walk 15 km over hilly terrain?
  • And are you ready to commit to targeted preparation over the coming months?

If your answers give you the confidence to take on the challenge, this trek is for you. To help you feel fully prepared, you will receive a tailor-made training plan a few weeks after your booking.

Still not sure and want to test yourself before committing?
Our micro-adventures closer to home are the ideal way to get a taste of the hiking experience.

To judge whether this trek suits you, take a look at our overview of the difficulty level. Some options, such as luggage transport, can make the hike easier. To test yourself before you leave, try one of our micro-adventures, such as the Mullerthal Trail or the Packraft Trail.

What is the minimum age for taking part?

The minimum age for The Balkan Trail is 16; travellers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Is this trip suitable for children?

No, The Balkan Trail is not suitable for young children, as the minimum age to take part is 16.

Looking for a great family adventure with younger children? Have a look at the family trips on the Travelbase website.

With how many people can I book this trip?

You can book The Balkan Trail solo, as a duo or as a group.

Your week at a glance
  • Day 1: shuttle from Hotel Marinaj → Tirana airport → Theth, briefing in the evening
  • Days 2 to 6: 5 days of hiking across Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro
  • Day 7: shuttle Theth → Tirana airport → Hotel Marinaj
  • Optional: one night at Hotel Marinaj before or after the trek
How does the hike work?
  • Your personal GPS for freedom. Before departure you get access to our app. It contains the full route, points of interest and the details of every stage. It is the perfect tool for hiking at your own pace and independently if you wish.
  • Double expertise at your side. You are never alone. On every trek you are accompanied by our English-speaking guides (for easy communication) and a local guide (for their intimate knowledge of the terrain).
  • The best of both worlds. You can fully disconnect while following the route on your phone, with complete peace of mind that a professional, experienced team is looking after you and handling all the logistics behind the scenes (including the border permits!).
Is there on-site support?

Yes, absolutely, and that is where we really make the difference. Every trip is led by a team of guides, at least one of whom speaks English, who ensure smooth communication and a great group atmosphere, alongside a certified local guide who knows the terrain inside out. On arrival you will be warmly welcomed by our guides, who give you an introductory briefing before your journey begins. Every morning the team holds a briefing on the day's stage, with practical tips, highlights not to be missed and route information, so you know exactly what to expect. Throughout the trek the guides are a reliable safety net; they are trained to handle any emergency calmly and professionally, so you can hike with peace of mind. Just before departure you also get access to a chat group with all the participants on your departure date, so you can easily get to know the other hikers and reach our team before and during the trip.

Do I hike alone or in a group?

You are completely free to hike at your own pace. To ensure safety and a smooth hike, one guide leads the way, another brings up the rear, and further guides are spread along the route. You don't have to stay close to them all the time, so you can easily find your own rhythm.

Every morning starts with a short briefing, and you can download the Travelbase app to have the route and all the practical information at your fingertips. A great group atmosphere usually develops naturally along the way, but it is always up to you whether you want to stay with the others. The only exception is extreme weather: safety comes first, and our guides will then ask everyone to walk together as one group.

How far will I walk and how difficult is it?

In total you will walk about 75 kilometres through the heart of the Balkans, spread over a week. The daily stages are generally between 11.6 and 17.3 kilometres, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery without exhausting yourself. The route is carefully balanced, with a reasonable progression in distance and elevation, so every day is stimulating yet entirely achievable. The exact daily distances may vary slightly depending on the departure; you will find all the details of your trip in the overview of the daily stages. For a precise idea of what awaits you, take a look at the "what to expect" section on the difficulty of the route, which goes into more detail on the terrain, the elevation and the weather conditions.

When can I do this trip?

The trek takes place during the summer season, from June to September 2027, the best time of year for hiking in the Balkans. There are 2 departures a week (on Wednesdays and Sundays), from 9 June to 15 September, so you can choose the departure that best fits your schedule. You can see all up-to-date departure dates, current prices and available places directly in the calendar on the website. If you would like to be informed personally as soon as new departure dates go online, you can leave your details with no obligation via the form on the booking page.

Can I customise the trip to my own liking?

We offer a fully mapped-out trip, so it is not possible to adjust the duration and schedule. You can, however, optionally add a night at Hotel Marinaj in Tirana before or after the trek. You are of course free to extend your trip on your own initiative, for example by staying a few days afterwards or travelling on to another country.

Prices & Booking Conditions

What are the additional costs?

The essentials are already included in the base price, but when booking you can add the following options with no obligation:

  • Equipment: rental of quality camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat) and hiking poles.
  • Meals: the "Balkan Meals" (€169), local meals prepared by the host families.
  • Comfort & extras: luggage transport, the Tirana – Theth shuttles and extra nights at Hotel Marinaj before or after the trek.
  • Insurance: travel insurance.

You will find a detailed overview of the prices per option and any mandatory costs (such as tourist tax) in the practical information section.

What are the Superflex cancellation conditions?

The Superflex cancellation conditions are available to everyone who books early.

They allow you to postpone your trip to another period in the same season (subject to availability) or cancel for free before a certain date, which is explicitly stated on the registration form.

If the deadline for the Superflex cancellation conditions has already passed, the booking conditions apply.

Can I still cancel my trip?

You can always cancel your trip. You will find the booking conditions here. You can also make use of the Superflex cancellation conditions. For more information, see the FAQ "What are the Superflex conditions?".

Can I modify my registration?

Subject to availability, you can add or remove most options up to 60 days before departure (check-in date). In general, we work on a first come, first served basis, so quick decisions always pay off.

Please note: some options cannot be cancelled or changed once booked.

Transport

Can I book flights through The Balkan Trail?

No, we do not offer flights for this trip. You book your own flight to Tirana, which gives you the freedom to choose the airline, airport and dates that suit you best.

Tip: book your Balkan Trail first to secure your place, then buy your flight. Make sure your flight times fit with the shuttle times, which you can see directly on the website. All the details are in the FAQs "Arrival flight" and "Return flight".

Meeting point
  • Day 1: join the shuttle at Hotel Marinaj or at Tirana airport, at the departure time shown. Making your own way? Meet at the Theth base camp (Bujtina Dreni) for the 5:00 pm briefing.
  • Day 7: the shuttle drops you at Tirana airport, then at Hotel Marinaj.

All shuttle times are shown on the website, depending on your departure date.

How do I get to the base camp?

Our base camp is at Guesthouse Dreni in Theth, a remote and beautiful valley in the Albanian Alps. As this region can be hard to reach on your own, we offer a shuttle that departs from Hotel Marinaj in Tirana, stops at Tirana airport and takes you to the base camp (€40 per trip), for a smooth, hassle-free journey. If you prefer to organise your own transport to Theth, you can join the group directly at Guesthouse Dreni for the initial briefing at 5:00 pm and skip the shuttle.

There is also a shuttle between Tirana airport and Hotel Marinaj around the trek: depending on the date, it runs the day before or the day after the trek. You can find the time of this shuttle on the website by choosing your departure date. It costs €8 per trip. If this time doesn't suit you, you can take a taxi in front of the airport (about €20) or ask your hotel directly.

Preparation

What about food and drinks?

We strongly recommend adding the "Balkan Meals" (€169) option, which offers 100% local cuisine throughout the trek, with 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) from the evening of day 1 (starting at the Theth base camp) until the morning of day 7. A vegetarian option is always available. Forget freeze-dried trekking food; your meals are prepared with love by the local families who host you, so you taste authentic regional specialities while directly supporting the local economy. Breakfasts are usually a hearty buffet with eggs, fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, bread, feta, yoghurt and traditional fritters. Lunches are packed sandwiches with fresh ingredients, and dinners vary every day so you discover different hot local dishes. As there are no supermarkets along the trail, only a few scattered mountain bars, sitting down to a home-cooked meal after a long day of hiking is pure comfort.

Where will we sleep?

During the 6 nights of the trek you sleep in a tent pitched directly on the grounds of local family guesthouses. You can bring your own camping gear or rent complete equipment from us. This format offers the best of both worlds: an authentic camping adventure under the stars, combined with the warm hospitality of the locals and access to basic sanitary facilities. Before or after the trek you can optionally book a night at Hotel Marinaj in Tirana, where the shuttle departs: the night before day 1 if you arrive the day before, or after day 7 if your return flight leaves the next day or you want to spend a last evening in the capital.

How should I train for this trek?

A few weeks after your booking you will receive a training plan by email to help you prepare step by step.

As the Balkan Trail involves significant elevation gain and steep climbs, it is essential to focus your preparation on cardio, leg strength and stair climbing. Training with a loaded backpack on rough terrain is also one of the best ways to prepare your legs and joints for this route.

In the end, the better prepared you are, the more you can relax, tackle the climbs and enjoy every step of this adventure!

What should I bring?

Shortly after your booking you will receive a detailed packing list, carefully put together by our experienced team, covering everything from clothing and equipment to handy extras. In the meantime, here are the essentials you will definitely need:

  • Sturdy hiking boots: choose well broken-in boots with good support (category A/B or B) that support your ankles and are suited to long mountain hikes on rough terrain.
  • Clothing for all weather conditions: mountain weather can change quickly. Reliable waterproof rain gear is essential, as are warm layers for cool evenings at altitude.
  • Backpack: a 30 to 35 litre daypack, along with a larger backpack or travel bag if you opt for luggage transport, or a 65 to 80 litre backpack if you plan to carry all your own gear throughout the hike.

Camping gear: yours or ours? If you bring your own gear, make sure it is good quality: a 3-season tent at minimum, an insulated sleeping mat (R-value min. 3) and a sleeping bag (comfort temperature 5 °C). You can also optionally rent a tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag (+ liner) and hiking poles from us.

Can I rent camping gear?

Yes! You can easily rent a tent, sleeping mat and/or sleeping bag directly from us. To make sure you have enough space for your belongings, we provide larger tents: if you travel alone, you get a two-person tent so you can store your backpack inside, and if you share a tent as a pair, you get a spacious three-person tent.

Rental prices: 1-person tent €49, 2-person tent €69, sleeping bag (+ liner) €30, sleeping mat €25, hiking poles €12. If you bring your own gear, make sure it is good quality: a 3-season tent at minimum, an insulated sleeping mat (R-value min. 3) and a sleeping bag (comfort temperature 5 °C). A detailed list will be sent well before departure.

Do many participants opt for luggage transport?

Yes, about 75% of participants opt for luggage transport. With luggage transport you can hike comfortably during the day carrying only a light daypack (30 to 35 L). However, if you are looking for an extra challenge and want a true self-reliant mountain hiking experience, you can of course choose to carry all your equipment and camping gear in your main backpack!

Do I need an international passport for this trek?

If you hold the nationality of a European Union country, a valid ID card is enough to travel to Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo, including for crossing the borders during the trek. If you do not hold the nationality of an EU country, a valid passport is required.

Is there mobile coverage or Wi-Fi on the trail?

Mobile coverage is generally limited and patchy in remote mountain passes, although you will get better reception in larger towns. All guesthouses along the route have Wi-Fi, but keep in mind that the connection can be quite slow in the mountains.

If you need mobile data during your trip, consider getting a local SIM card, as the usual international roaming charges apply outside the EU. Above all, we strongly encourage you to make the most of this remote setting and try to disconnect for a few days: going offline is one of the undisputed highlights of this trek!

What currency should I bring for personal expenses?

We recommend bringing about €200 in cash. You can use both euros and the local currency (the lek in Albania; Montenegro and Kosovo use the euro), although euros are widely accepted along the route. Please note that if you pay in euros, local hosts and shopkeepers may sometimes give you change in lek. Cash is essential, as there are no ATMs or card terminals on the remote mountain stages.

When will I receive the GPX files?

You will receive the GPX files via the Travelbase app no later than two weeks before departure, once everything has been definitively confirmed. If you have not received the GPX files two weeks before departure, you will need to contact the guides. You can do so as soon as the group chat is available in the Travelbase app.

Can I get to know the other participants beforehand?

Yes, two weeks before departure you can get to know your fellow travellers via the official group chat in the Travelbase app. In line with privacy legislation, we do not share personal contact details, but you can of course exchange details with each other during the trek.

General

What are the booking conditions?

When booking, you choose for yourself how much flexibility you need. Have a look at the different booking conditions and the payment, change and cancellation rules that apply.

What kind of footwear is required for the hike?

High-top hiking boots are mandatory. Low hiking shoes, trail running shoes, sneakers and other low shoes are not allowed. The terrain is often rough and demanding. High boots provide the ankle support you need and help reduce the risk of injury.

What are the gear specifications and dimensions?

The camping gear you can rent from us weighs about 4.7 kg in total for 1 person and 7.2 kg for 2 people (easy to split between two backpacks). Depending on the route, the information below may vary slightly:

  • Tent for 1 person: spacious 2-person tent of 2.7 kg (packed size: 51 x 17 cm).
  • Tent for 2 people: 3-person tent of 3.19 kg (packed size: 51 x 20 cm).
  • Lightweight self-inflating sleeping mat of 470 grams (packed size: 13 x 26 cm).
  • Comfortable sleeping bag of 1.55 kg (packed size: 40 x 24 cm). The comfort temperature varies depending on the route.
  • Hiking poles adjustable up to a maximum of 135 cm. You can check whether the poles suit you by measuring the distance between the ground and your elbow when your arm is bent at 90 degrees; if it is 135 cm or less, the poles will suit you.
Is gluten-free eating possible?

As in many cultures, bread is an integral part of breakfast and lunch, so it is important that we know your needs in advance. If you want to follow a gluten-free diet, please contact us at info@thebalkantrail.com so that we can take it into account with your booking. For the Balkan Trail, we recommend that you bring a little extra gluten-free bread yourself, so that you are sure to have enough carbohydrates/energy during the hike.

Can you take food allergies or intolerances into account?

Meals are prepared by the local families who host you. We can take your dietary requirements (vegetarian, allergies, intolerances) into account if you let us know in advance, when you book.

Can I bring my dog?

No, it is not allowed to bring your dog on this trek. If you are looking for a hike where you can bring your dog, have a look at the dog-friendly trips on the Travelbase website.

Giving back to nature with Greentripper

When booking, you can contribute to a certified climate project by Greentripper. Your contribution supports an initiative of 11 local projects in Uganda that distribute more efficient cooking stoves. This reduces fuel consumption, helps protect forests from deforestation and improves air quality for local families. The project is Gold Standard certified, a guarantee of the highest international standards for climate projects.

If you choose to make a contribution, Travelbase will also offset the emissions on site. After your trip you will receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Luggage

What baggage can I take on my flight?

Baggage rules differ per airline and fare, and airlines can change them, so check the rules on your airline's website before you book and before you travel.

If you carry your own gear in a large trekking backpack (65 to 80 L), you will usually need to check it in as hold baggage. Pack your essentials for the first days in your daypack.

Flight Info & tickets

Do the trip dates include my travel days?

Not necessarily. On our website we show the actual trip dates (day 1: drive from Tirana to Theth; day 7: drive from Theth to Tirana).

Depending on your flight, you may arrive the day before the trip and fly home on the last day of the trip, or arrive on the morning of day 1, just before leaving for Theth, and fly home the day after the trip, after an extra night in Tirana.

You can see the shuttle times directly on the website.

Booking your flights

Book your Balkan Trail first to secure your place, then buy your flight at your leisure, so you don't end up with a flight when the trip is already full.

  • Compare prices on Google Flights or Skyscanner.
  • Many low-cost airlines fly to Tirana (Wizz Air, Transavia, Ryanair, etc.).
