Hiking in the Balkans

Get ready for an adventure like no other. This trek takes you deep into wild mountains and shepherd villages, where locals welcome you with an unforgettable smile.

Hike across the borders of three countries: Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo. Immerse yourself in one of Europe’s best-preserved regions.

The “Peaks of the Balkans” route connects these three countries via ancient shepherds’ trails. It has won the WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow award, and takes you through the Gashi Valley, whose forests are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ve been bringing hikers here every summer since 2021.

Your Balkan Trail, day by day

Organising a cross-border trek through Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro on your own is a real logistical challenge. That’s why we’ve organised everything for you.

We’ve designed a five-day hiking loop that takes you through the most beautiful parts of the “Peaks of the Balkans”, starting and ending in Theth. Our guides can adapt the route depending on the weather.

The trip lasts seven days, from day 1 to day 7. Depending on your flight, you may arrive the day before or fly home the day after. You can add an optional night at the Marinaj Hotel before or after the programme, and choose the flights that suit you best using the shuttle times for your departure date.

Shuttles

Click the button above to view the shuttle times for your departure.

Day 1: the shuttle leaves from Marinaj Hotel (Tirana), stops at Tirana Airport, then continues to Theth.
Day 7: it takes the reverse route: Theth → airport → Marinaj Hotel.

On some dates, you’ll also find shuttles on Day 0 or Day 8. An additional shuttle is available outside the 7-day trip:
Day 0 (the day before the trip starts): if your flight arrives the day before, the shuttle takes you from the airport to Marinaj Hotel.

If the shuttle time doesn’t work for you, there are plenty of taxis outside the airport that can take you to central Tirana for around €20.

Flights
  • Book your own flight to Tirana International Airport (TIA). Check the shuttle times for your departure date before you book, so your arrival fits the start of the trip. Direct flights to Tirana run from many European cities, and we’re happy to help if you have questions.

Need a transfer? Our shuttles run between Tirana airport, Marinaj Hotel and Theth. They’re optional extras that you can add to your booking.

Add a hotel night at Marinaj Hotel before or after your trip if your flight requires it.

Additional options

When booking, you can add the following options to your trek.

Join the Balkan Trail

Step 1: choose your departure day: Wednesday or Sunday.

Step 2: book your own flight to Tirana (TIA).

Step 3: add your nights in Tirana and the shuttle according to your flight times.

Book your own flight
  • Fly to Tirana International Airport (TIA): many airlines fly there from across Europe.
  • Match the shuttle times: check the shuttle times for your departure date before you book, so your arrival and departure fit the trip. Your flight may land the day before the trek or leave the day after.
  • Need a night in Tirana? Add a night at the Marinaj Hotel before or after the trek, and take the shuttle from there.
  • Luggage: check your airline’s baggage rules. Your backpack and camping gear fit easily in a checked bag.
What are the baggage rules?

Baggage rules depend on your airline. Low-cost airlines usually include only a small bag that fits under the seat, and charge extra for cabin baggage and checked bags.

For this trek we recommend a checked bag, so your backpack and camping gear travel safely. Airlines may change their rules, so check their website before you book and before you leave.

Your own flights

Book your Balkan Trail to secure your spot, then buy your flight at your leisure so you don’t end up booking a flight only to find that our trip is already full.

If you can’t find a flight that works for you, get in touch and we’ll find a solution together.

Meeting point
  • Day 1: meet the shuttle at Marinaj Hotel or Tirana Airport at the time indicated for your departure. Making your own way there? Head to Theth base camp (Bujtina Dreni) for the 17:00 briefing.
  • Day 7: the shuttle drops you off at Tirana Airport, then continues to Marinaj Hotel.

All times are listed under Shuttle times.

Outbound flight
  • Choose a flight that lands in Tirana on day 1, at least 45 minutes before the shuttle passes through the airport.
  • Arriving the day before? Add an optional night before the trek at Marinaj Hotel and board the shuttle there.
  • Example: your trek starts on Wednesday, 16 June → look for a flight landing before 09:00 on 16 June, or on 15 June with a night at the hotel.

To get to the city centre, take our airport-to-Marinaj Hotel shuttle (€8) or a taxi outside the airport (available 24/7, approximately €20).

Return flight

You have two options:

  1. Take a flight on day 7, at least 2 hours after the shuttle arrives at the airport. Example: trek from 16 June to 22 June, shuttle at the airport around 13:00 → flight after 15:00 on 22 June.
  2. Stay an extra night (optional Marinaj Hotel) and take a flight the next day. Example: flight on 23 June.
Your week at a glance
  • Day 1: shuttle from Marinaj Hotel → Tirana Airport → Theth, evening briefing
  • Days 2 to 6: 5 days of hiking through Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro
  • Day 7: shuttle from Theth → Tirana Airport → Marinaj Hotel
  • Optional: an overnight stay at Marinaj Hotel before or after the trek

How far will I walk and how difficult is it?

In total you will walk about 75 kilometres through the heart of the Balkans, spread over a week. The daily stages are generally between 11.6 and 17.3 kilometres, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery without exhausting yourself. The route is carefully balanced, with a reasonable progression in distance and elevation, so every day is stimulating yet entirely achievable. The exact daily distances may vary slightly depending on the departure; you will find all the details of your trip in the overview of the daily stages. For a precise idea of what awaits you, take a look at the “what to expect” section on the difficulty of the route, which goes into more detail on the terrain, the elevation and the weather conditions.

Where will we sleep?

During the 6 nights of the trek you sleep in a tent pitched directly on the grounds of local family guesthouses. You can bring your own camping gear or rent complete equipment from us. This format offers the best of both worlds: an authentic camping adventure under the stars, combined with the warm hospitality of the locals and access to basic sanitary facilities. Before or after the trek you can optionally book a night at Hotel Marinaj in Tirana, where the shuttle departs: the night before day 1 if you arrive the day before, or after day 7 if your return flight leaves the next day or you want to spend a last evening in the capital.

Is there on-site support?

Yes, absolutely, and that is where we really make the difference. Every trip is led by a team of guides, at least one of whom speaks English, who ensure smooth communication and a great group atmosphere, alongside a certified local guide who knows the terrain inside out. On arrival you will be warmly welcomed by our guides, who give you an introductory briefing before your journey begins. Every morning the team holds a briefing on the day’s stage, with practical tips, highlights not to be missed and route information, so you know exactly what to expect. Throughout the trek the guides are a reliable safety net; they are trained to handle any emergency calmly and professionally, so you can hike with peace of mind. Just before departure you also get access to a chat group with all the participants on your departure date, so you can easily get to know the other hikers and reach our team before and during the trip.

What are the Superflex cancellation conditions?

The Superflex cancellation conditions are available to everyone who books early.

They allow you to postpone your trip to another period in the same season (subject to availability) or cancel for free before a certain date, which is explicitly stated on the registration form.

If the deadline for the Superflex cancellation conditions has already passed, the booking conditions apply.
