Why travel with the Balkan Trail?
  • A cross-border adventure, without the headache. Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro are tricky to explore on your own. We handle 100% of the logistics (local transport, the route in the app and, most importantly, the border permits), so you only have one thing left to do: walk and switch off.
  • An authentic immersion. Forget soulless hotels. You’ll stay with local people and pitch your tent there. It’s your chance to experience genuine local hospitality and make memories with people you’ll never forget.
  • A memorable challenge at a fair price. The route is a fantastic challenge, but perfectly balanced. Our experienced French-speaking and local guides are there to support and motivate you, giving you an extraordinary, perfectly organised adventure with no surprises.
Who is this hike for?

The difficulty of a trek depends on many factors. Thanks to this clear overview, you can decide for yourself whether this trek is right for you. Options such as luggage transport can also make the hike easier. Anyone aged between 16 and 65 who is in good physical condition and has a sense of adventure can take part in this trek. Please note that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This trip involves plenty of physical activity, so good health is essential. You should also be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Want to try a multi-day hike for the first time, but unsure about your fitness level? Ask yourself these questions:

  • What type of physical activity do I practise regularly, and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that could affect my ability to walk?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 km over hilly terrain?
  • Can I follow a targeted training plan over the coming months to prepare properly?

If your answers give you complete confidence to set off on an adventure, this trek is right for you. One week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to help you prepare and complete the route comfortably.

  3. Tirana hotel (day 8): flexibility. After the trek, your night at base camp between days 7 and 8 is the final night included in the Balkan Trail programme. If your return flight is booked for the day after the trip (day 9) and you’d like to spend one last evening in Tirana, you can add an extra hotel night for day 8.

  • The “Balkan Meals” option (€169): 100% local. This is the option we highly recommend. It includes all 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for the 5 days of trekking. A vegetarian option is of course available. Meals are included from dinner on day 2 through breakfast on day 8.
  • Hospitality comes first. Forget freeze-dried food. Your meals are prepared “with love” by the families hosting you. It’s a chance to discover local specialities while directly supporting the local economy.
  • Comfort after a day on the trail. There are no supermarkets along the trek, just a few bars. After a long day of hiking, there’s nothing better than sitting down to a delicious, authentic meal.
  • Note: the option starts at Theth base camp. Meals are included from dinner on day 2 through breakfast on day 7.
How is the hike organised?

What should I bring with me?

Packing your bag: the essentials

No stress, we’ve got everything covered! You’ll receive a complete, detailed packing list well in advance. Here’s what you need to remember:

  1. Your shoes: these are your top priority. Bring excellent high-cut hiking boots (category A-B/B) that protect your ankles and are already comfortable for you to wear.
  2. The weather: be ready for anything! A high-quality technical rain jacket is essential. Evenings at higher altitudes can be chilly, so don’t forget warm clothing (fleece, beanie).

Choosing your backpack. Your choice depends on whether you add the “luggage transport” option:

  • With luggage transport: a daypack (around 30-35L) is perfect.
  • Without luggage transport: you’ll need a full-sized trekking backpack (around 65-80L) to carry all your gear, including optional camping equipment.

Camping gear: yours or ours?

  • Bringing your own gear? Make sure it’s good quality (a tent rated for at least 3 seasons, an insulated sleeping mat with an R-value of at least 3, and a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of 5°C).
  • Rent from us (optional):  our rental kit includes a compact, high-quality tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag (with liner). Hiking poles are also available to rent.
Can I rent camping equipment?
  • The choice is yours. You’re welcome to bring your own camping gear or choose our rental option and travel light, both in spirit and in your backpack.
  • Renting your gear makes things easier. We provide a complete, high-quality kit designed for the conditions in the Balkans: a tent, a sleeping bag (plus liner), and a sleeping mat.
  • If you bring your own gear, make sure it’s up to the job. The right equipment is key to your comfort: bring a tent (at least 3-season), an insulated sleeping mat (minimum R-value 3), and a sleeping bag (minimum comfort temperature 5°C). We’ll send you a detailed packing list well before departure.
How do I get to base camp?
  • Basecamp in Theth. The basecamp in Theth is in a remote area, which is all part of its charm! However, getting there on your own isn’t always easy. If you’re making your own way there, you can meet us at Guest House Dreni for the first briefing, so you won’t need to book the shuttle option.
  • Our solution: a dedicated shuttle. To make sure you arrive stress-free, we offer an optional shuttle between Tirana and the basecamp. It’s the easiest and safest option.
  • Your flights: find all the flight information here.
Do I have to follow the guide, or can I hike on my own?
  • Your trek, your pace. While a great group atmosphere naturally develops, you’re completely free to walk at your own pace. You don’t have to stick with the group, unless you want to!
  • Everything you need for freedom. With a full briefing every morning and detailed information in our trekking app, you have all the tools you need to follow the route independently and enjoy some real time offline.
  • Support when you need it. Our guides spread out along the route so they’re there if needed. You don’t have to walk with them.
  • The only exception: in very bad weather, when your safety becomes the priority and the guides ask you to stay together as a group.
How can I offset the CO2 emissions from my trip?

When booking, you can contribute to a certified climate project through Greentripper. Your contribution supports an initiative made up of 11 local projects in Uganda that distribute more efficient cookstoves. This reduces fuel consumption, helps protect forests from deforestation and improves air quality for local families. The project is Gold Standard certified, meeting the highest international standards for climate projects.

If you choose to contribute, Travelbase will also offset the emissions generated locally. After your trip, you'll receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Want to learn more about our initiatives for more sustainable tourism? Find out more at Travelbase.

How far will I travel?
  • An adventure of around 75 km. In total, you’ll cover approximately 75 kilometres through the heart of the Balkans. It’s the perfect distance for a full week of immersion.
  • Manageable daily stages. Your route is divided into daily stages ranging from 10 to 20 km, giving you time to take in the scenery without exhausting yourself.
  • A perfectly balanced challenge. It’s not just about the distance, but about finding the right balance. The route has been designed to strike a smooth balance between the kilometres covered and the elevation gain tackled each day.
Will we be accompanied by guides?
  • Absolutely, and that’s our strength. You’re supported by two layers of expertise: a team of French-speaking guides (for easy communication and a great atmosphere), plus a local guide who knows the terrain inside out.
  • Your daily briefing. Every morning, they give you a full briefing on the day’s stage, share their tips and get you motivated for the adventure.
  • Your safety net. They’re there to support you whenever you need them, know the route like the back of their hand and are trained to handle emergencies. You can walk with peace of mind, knowing they’re looking out for you.
